Yakima Basin Reservoir and River Recreation Surveys
We need your help!
The U.S. Forest Service in cooperation with the Bureau of Reclamation
is in the process of gathering data from recreational users of the
Tieton, Naches and Bumping Rivers and Rimrock, Clear and Bumping
Lakes. This information will be used by the Bureau of Reclamation
as part of a study to determine the impact of recreation on water
resources as it relates to water storage. Potential impacts to all
resources will be identified during the preparation of an Environmental
Impact Statement “EIS” that will be conducted on the
Water Storage Study alternatives. It has been Reclamation’s
experience that when additional water is being made available for
other purposes such as fish and wildlife, municipal, industrial,
and irrigation, etc. it is usually beneficial to recreation users.
Currently site-specific recreation-related data is unavailable.
In order to accurately assess the current recreation environment
within this area, additional information must be collected from
recreationists who visit the lakes and rivers. Further, the information
collected from the recreating public will allow Reclamation to adequately
assess the impacts that different water storage options have on
the recreation environment and the local and national economy. The
current recreation environment (existing condition) and the potential
environmental impacts (consequences) will be documented in the Storage
Study EIS. Pertinent information collected from the public will
be displayed in an appendix to the EIS. The recreating public is
highly encouraged to participate in this survey as the outcome will
directly affect future recreational opportunities available for
their use. Although the potential positive or negative impacts to
recreation have not yet been determined, it is assumed that there
will be added benefits to recreation users within this area and
that there will be additional water related recreation opportunities
available to the public. Surveys may be completed in the field when
contacted by Forest Service personnel or Northwest Land Management
campground hosts. You may also obtain a survey at the Naches Ranger
Station or many of the local businesses on U.S. Highway 12. It takes
approximately 15-20 minutes to complete the survey. Completed surveys
may be dropped off at the Naches Ranger Station. During non-work
hours they may be deposited in the mailbox inside the Ranger Station
entryway.
